Our Philosophy

Emotional Beauty Through Visual Experience

We believe lighting is a form of art that can transform spaces into dynamic experiences, creating powerful emotions. We are inspired by light that creates feelings of joy and wonder, bringing surprise into the everyday. Creating large-scale, environmental LED artworks that engage people emotionally requires a skillful combination of aesthetic creativity, technical acumen, and close collaboration. Studio 1Thousand strives for excellence in all three aspects.

Our approach as a lighting arts practice is to create engaging, site-specific LED sculptures that are both elegant and dynamic. The installations respond to a space with a quiet rigor, using composition, repetition, and density to create geometric light sculptures that expand the viewer’s perception of space. We take pride in creating works that are beautiful from multiple viewpoints, whether the piece is seen from a distance as a large volume of light or seen up close and appreciated as a collection of highly-crafted and detailed objects. Our approach is always to create an installation which will reveal itself over days, weeks, and years, offering the viewer a chance to build a deeper understanding with every visit.

Studio 1Thousand is also an innovation lab with a strong research component. We internally develop LED modules and fabrication suites through the creation of experimental, smaller scale art pieces. Much of the technology developed for these artworks is then refined and expanded in order to create full-scale product systems. Sustainability in every aspect is important to us, from using the latest technologies to minimize energy usage, through efficiency of the design and installation processes. Our systems are structurally and mechanically light-weight, have a long longevity, and are easy to maintain.

We strongly believe collaboration is key to creating a successful expression of the client’s vision, and work closely with architects, electrical engineers, project managers, and contractors from inception to installation and testing. Our long-term relationship with our fabricators, RUSH Design, helps ensure that every piece is highly-crafted and expertly customized for the unique requirements of each site.

Ultimately, our goal is to create object-based lighting experiences to elicit emotional response. We strive to create works that uses the beauty of light to create a unique experience for the viewer — an experience full of wonder and delight that leaves a lasting impression for years to come.
